Building a WCAG-2.1-compliant government portal: the (hard) a11y lessons learned

Did you know that sometimes you have to remove an alt attribute from an <img> tag in order to make it accessible? Have you ever thought to test how your site performs on 400% zoom level? How does that lovely form component of yours behave when validation kicks in and the (vision-impaired) user needs to rely on VoiceOver to figure out what went wrong? Despite having 20+ years of experience working with web technologies, it took a big UK government portal with a dedicated team of a11y experts to teach me what it means to make a site truly accessible. Join me for this quick tour for some of the most surprising lessons learned!

Bio

Angelos has 20 years of experience in web development. He has happily spent the last 12 of those working as a frontend developer and UX designer in Adzuna. He loves all things HTML / CSS / JS and is probably one of the few people who actually enjoys delving into legacy jQuery monoliths and breaking them apart.
